Canadian Backgammon Pros Compete for World Championship Inclusion
-- Three-year competition training process leads to Monaco in 2025 --
TORONTO, June 21, 2022 -- The Canadian Backgammon Federation™ is holding their third bi-annual National Championships in downtown Toronto during the 2022 Canada Day weekend. Members from across the country will meet to play for the Canadian Cup™ as well as both City and Provincial Cups. With the advent of online and mobile apps, backgammon has seen a recent resurgence. Predating chess by at least 3000 years and known as the oldest game in recorded history, backgammon is played by 200 million people in a multitude of countries worldwide.
“This will be the first time many Members will set eyes on the people they have been playing remotely during Covid’s two-year disruption,” said the Federation’s National Chairman José Macédo. “It’s going to be very exciting to finally meet everyone!”
The Canadian Backgammon Federation’s mission is to find every experienced Backgammon player within Canada and to develop a team capable of representing Canada at the World Championships in Monaco in 2025.
• The Canadian Championship attracts Members from Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Saskatoon, Québec and throughout Ontario. Attendance is limited but places have been made available for GTA residents.
• Registration information can be found at: http://TO2022.ca
About Canada’s National Backgammon Federation™
Based in Markham, the CBF™️ is a nationally federated, private members-only non-profit dedicated to promoting the game of Backgammon in Canada. Our leadership consists of an executive board as well as dedicated volunteers who work year-round to plan member events. They are jointly responsible for the creation, administration, maintenance and propagation of our Canadian Chapters on a Regional and National basis. Federation Officials vet all applicants, publish our quarterly newsletter and provide instruction to members and administer both live and online weekly competitions.
Note: Although Backgammon can be played for monetary gain, the Federation has prohibited gambling in any and all forms. The Federation believes backgammon is its own reward and a stake is completely unnecessary.

It was a very happy CANADA DAY for Edmonton’s “Wayne Gretzky of Canadian Backgammon” Mr. MARIUS NEAMTU. He has won the CANADIAN CUP™ at the first Canadian Backgammon Federation℠ Championship event, held in Montréal, Québec.
The first competition of it’s kind in this country, the search for a national champion took a little over ten months said current President and event producer, Mr. James Arthur Burke.
“We are delighted with the results and congratulate all the participants as they showed each other the style and class we are trying to instill in this new organization. They are all winners in my book and now constitute the bedrock in our country upon which we will reboot the world’s oldest board game.”
Men and women from across Canada traveled from Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Northern and Southern Ontario, Montreal, Halifax and New Brunswick to help make the event happen and try their skill at “the world’s cruelest game,” Backgammon. These charter participants have each been awarded a free permanent lifetime membership!
Second place was won by Mr. Robert Robitaille of Timmins, Ontario.
A surprisingly adept player, he emerged out of the players field demonstrating a marked talent for the game winning almost all his matches. This valiant effort has earned him a permanent place in Canadian Backgammon history as the first recipient of the O’Cannabis Cup. Congratulations! Bob.
Next year’s tournament, to be held in the winner’s home city on Alberta day, will most assuredly attract more players to fulfill the 2019, 64 player maximum limit.
